Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most famous architects in the world. Over the course of his 70-year career, he designed more than 1,000 structures. More than 400 were eventually built, with some destroyed by natural disasters. One of the most beautiful Wright homes is still standing in New York and open to the public for tours. The Darwin D. Martin House Complex in Buffalo is a magnificent example of Wright’s brilliant architecture.
Wright was famous for his Prairie School, an architectural style with lots of horizontal lines. The buildings flowed into the environment and complemented the natural landscape.
Buffalo’s Darwin D. Martin House is a great example of Prairie School architecture. It’s considered to be one of Wright’s best works.
Wright designed the home so that the rooms all come together as one, with as little division as possible. It’s actually a series of interconnected buildings, including a greenhouse and carriage house.
Nearly 400 windows are throughout the home, many featuring beautiful stained glass.
The gardens are as gorgeous as the home itself. They were designed so that flowers would be in bloom throughout most of the year.
You can take a tour of the home, which has been fully restored. Amazingly, at one point it was in terrible condition, but it is now as beautiful as it was when it was first built in 1905.
It’s almost overwhelming how much beauty is on this property. The stunning architecture is enough on its own, but the home and garden also feature several statues.
This masterpiece of architecture hosts various events throughout the year.
The museum regularly holds architectural photography workshops and yoga classes. Bricks and Brews is a popular event featuring food trucks and local breweries.
