House of the week: Bush beauty with plenty of surprises

A secluded tropical home surrounded by lush gardens and native bush has hit the market with motocross track, stunning pool and an outdoor bath hut with a ‘Snappy’ surprise.

The 8ha property at 460 Monck Rd, Acacia Hills, has been thoughtfully created by the husband and wife owners.

The husband said they bought the empty block in 2004 and built their dream home between 2009 and 2011.

“We wanted to be up in the trees, we wanted to be secluded and we wanted to have lovely gardens and grounds around us,” he said.

“My wife wanted Mataranka Springs so instead of putting in springs I put in a pool with a heater, which can also cool the pool as well.

“We also wanted a pond, which we called Lochy’s Pond after the big water monitor that’s always in it.

“He’s very cheeky.”

The spacious home has Colorbond cladding and roofing and big, open spaces flowing out to balconies.

“We set the house up having a wing for living and entertaining, a wing for guests and family, and a wing for us,” the owner said.

“We’ve got a huge entertainment area upstairs and we’ve got a balcony off three of the four bedrooms.”

In the master wing there is a bedroom opening to a private balcony, a walk-in robe and an ensuite with separate toilet, shower, bath and dual basins.

The central section of the home has a living/dining area flowing out to a big balcony and a kitchen opening to yet another balcony, this one overlooking the pool.

The kitchen has stone benchtops, breakfast bar, stainless steel appliances, walk-in pantry and plenty of storage.

In the final wing there are three bedrooms, with two opening to a balcony, a study and a family bathroom.

Downstairs, there is a laundry, a bathroom, another living room and plenty of undercover space for parking and entertaining.

Outside, there is the stunning fully-tiled pool surrounded by landscaped grounds, Merbau decking and a Bali hut.

The property also has a dam with another Bali hut, which has a working bath overlooking the water and a friendly big croc – fake, of course.

“We got Snappy quite a few years ago and we put him next to the pond and fooled a few relatives down south, and even some choppers that would fly over,” the owner said.

“He’s getting a bit old, so now he sits in the Bali hut.”

The property also has a motocross/BMX track, native bushland and a shed with three-phase power.

“When we built the house, we had 10 grandchildren and three children up here,” the owner said.

“It’s a real family home.

“We’ve got the motocross track, the pond big enough for a canoe, and we used to sit on the Bali hut and feed the cherabin.

“I remember my granddaughters, they used to come ride the quads and I’d yell ‘stay on the track’ but they’d come tearing across the grass.

“The kids just loved it.”

The owner said he and his wife were selling to downsize but they would miss the perfect oasis they had created together.

“It is luxurious and you have everything you could want,” he said.

“We love the peace, the tranquillity and the animals.

“We have kangaroos and the birdlife is phenomenal, especially when you have the sprinklers going.

“The property is close to everything.

“We’re two-and-a-half minutes to the highway, you’ve got all the shopping at Coolalinga and Humpty Doo and you can head to Adelaide River for lunch.

“You can go to the wildlife park and Berry Springs up the road, you have easy access to the Arnhem Highway and it’s about 40 minutes to the centre of Darwin.”
